The older day camp at BigRock Aikikai is always packed with eager participants and a ton of excitement. Even if you’ve never stepped foot inside of a dojo before, all students ages 10 and up are welcome to take part in this U18 event.

If you’re wondering why this week is such a special experience, see below for an outline of this amazing camp!

This day camp is loaded with Aikido training sessions, each designed to boost the technical development of each student and propel them towards their next belt level. With the help of our dedicated teaching team, students will advance through their techniques quickly and have a deep sense of their progression throughout the camp. They will gain more confidence, discipline, and determination along the way, especially as they strive to meet the high standards of our older day camp.

Every training session will begin with a new drill, each designed to increase muscular and cardiovascular endurance. Although challenging, participants will persevere through these workouts and find themselves reaping the benefits by the end of camp, instilling a sense of  pride and satisfaction after putting their all into completing these drills. Animal relay races, medicine ball races, dodging pool noodles, and pulling peers across the mat via belt-chains are all some staples of the older day camp experience.

Our Virtues Program is another pillar of the day camp. Our goal at the dojo is to make every student the best version of themselves possible, and a method we use to achieve this result is learning about important virtues to have in everyday life, such as respect, humility, kindness, and courage. By demonstrating these virtues throughout the camp, the participants will be recognized and rewarded for their outstanding efforts, building their confidence, character, and ability to de-escalate situations without resorting to physical violence.

Arguably, the most exciting part of day camp is the low energy and high energy games, especially the final game we play at the end of each camp day. Some favourites include hide and seek in the dark, where students strategically dodge the seeker’s flashlight in an attempt to not get caught. Another favourite would be our famous game of tag through a maze built out of mats, also known as “Snow Leopard”. Also taking place in the dark, this game has students sprinting through the dojo to avoid getting tagged by the pool noodle of the person who’s ‘it’ (a.k.a. the Snow Leopard). These games combine factors of cardio, awareness, and thinking ahead to make for an exhilarating finish to each camp day.

To sum up, our older day camp isn’t one to miss! It’s always a summer highlight. Students will leave this five day Aikido extravaganza feeling perseverant, rewarded, and ready to overcome their next challenge. We hope to see your child from August 17th to 21st at our older day camp!
